Sapporo is Hokkaido's largest city and transport hub, laid out on a rare Japanese street grid. It runs the Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) in early February, a strong food scene built on miso ramen, crab and Genghis Khan grilled mutton, and the Sapporo Beer Museum in the old brewery. Most other Hokkaido destinations — Otaru, Furano, Niseko, Hakodate — need a further train, bus or rental car from here.

Getting around

Three subway lines and a streetcar loop cover the centre, and the station-to-Susukino stretch is an easy walk or a short underground-mall shortcut in bad weather. For the rest of Hokkaido use JR limited-express trains, long-distance buses or a rental car, though winter driving needs real snow-tyre experience.
