De Hoop is a 34,000-hectare reserve on the Overberg coast, about three hours from Cape Town, reached only by gravel road. Its marine reserve stretches 5 km out to sea and is one of the largest marine protected areas in Africa. The reserve is part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site and holds around 1,500 plant species, 34 of which grow nowhere else. Bontebok, eland, ostriches and baboons are common near the Opstal camp; southern right whales pass close to the shore from roughly June to November. The famous Whale Trail is a 5-day, 55 km coastal hike with overnight accommodation, booked far in advance.
