Brackley Beach and Stanhope are two small north-shore communities inside or beside Prince Edward Island National Park, about 21 km from Charlottetown. There is no town centre and no useful public transport: you need a car. Come for the beaches, the dunes, the drive-in and cottage life, not for sightseeing. Two nights is enough; one works if you only want sand and a seafood dinner.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: the two villages are about 10 min apart on Route 6, and the Gulf Shore Parkway links the beaches inside the national park. No useful bus service; taxis from Charlottetown are expensive for repeated trips. Bikes work on the parkway but distances and wind make them a half-day plan, not a way to run errands.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are rip currents and cold water, deer and cyclists on Route 6 at dusk, and driving after a few drinks on dark back roads.
  • Almost everything is seasonal: many cottages, restaurants and the drive-in close by mid-September or earlier.
  • Park entry is charged per vehicle at the national park gates; buy the pass at the gate or online.
  • Swimming is unpatrolled at times and the surf can be rough; check conditions at the beach.
  • Cell coverage is fine on the main roads but patchy on the parkway and back roads.
  • Book July–August cottages months ahead; the north shore fills up.
