Big South Fork protects a 125,000-acre (about 506 km²) stretch of the Cumberland Plateau where the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River has cut a deep gorge through sandstone. The plateau's resistant cap has left one of the densest concentrations of natural arches in the eastern United States, plus the highest waterfall in Kentucky. The land was logged by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company until the 1960s; Congress created the recreation area in 1974 and the Army Corps of Engineers bought the land and handed it to the National Park Service in 1991. There is no entrance fee and no lodge inside the boundary — you camp or sleep in the gateway towns of Oneida and Jamestown, Tennessee, or Stearns, Kentucky.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Bandy Creek visitor centre, the campground and its pool are reachable by car with paved parking and short walks.
- Blue Heron museum has a paved path along the river with benches; the railway is step-on, step-off (check).
- Twin Arches, Yahoo Falls and most gorge overlooks involve steep steps and rough dirt; not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Pack out all rubbish — there is no bin service on most trails.
- Use existing fire rings and dead-and-down wood only; do not build new rings.
- Keep to marked trails to limit erosion on the sandstone rims.
- Support the gateway towns of Oneida, Jamestown and Stearns by buying fuel, food and lodging there.

When is the best time to visit Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area?
April–May and September–October: mild temperatures, running water in spring, fall colour in October and fewer people. July–August is hot and humid, and winter brings ice on the rim trails.
Do I need a permit to camp in the backcountry?
Yes. Buy a backcountry permit at the Bandy Creek or Blue Heron visitor centre or on the park website. The maximum stay is 14 days and groups larger than 24 need special permission.
Is there lodging inside the park?
No hotel or motel inside the boundary. You camp at Bandy Creek, Blue Heron or Alum Ford, walk in to Charit Creek Lodge, or stay in Oneida or Jamestown, Tennessee, or Stearns, Kentucky.
Can I swim or paddle in the river?
Paddling is popular but the Big South Fork ranges from class I to class IV whitewater — check the gauge and your skill level first. Drowning is the leading cause of death here, so wear a PFD and watch children near the water.
Are there bears?
Yes. Black bears are active throughout the recreation area, and food storage restrictions are in force at Bandy Creek. Keep food and scented items in a locked vehicle or bear-resistant container.
