Nightcap National Park protects one of the last stands of lowland subtropical rainforest in New South Wales, part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage listing, about 33 km inland from Byron Bay. The draw is Minyon Falls, which drops more than 100 m off the escarpment to a plunge pool, with a lookout a short walk from a sealed road and a rough 2.6 km track down to the base. Entry is free and there is no camping inside the park, so most visitors come for a half day from Byron Bay or the hinterland villages and base themselves outside. Rainfall is the highest in the state, around 2,500 mm a year, which makes the tracks muddy and the falls strong; the drier months from April to October are the reliable window.

Accessibility
- The Minyon Falls lookout is a short, mostly level walk from the car park and is the easiest option for limited mobility.
- The falls track, Big Scrub loop and the longer ridge tracks are steep or uneven and not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on formed tracks to limit erosion and the spread of root-rot fungus in the rainforest.
- Carry out everything you bring in; there are no bins at the trailheads.
- Do not feed or approach wildlife, and keep food sealed in the car.

How much does it cost to enter Nightcap National Park?
Nothing. There is no entry fee for Nightcap and no charge for parking at the trailheads. You pay only if you book camping elsewhere in the region, and prices there are a 2026 estimate.
What are the best hikes in Nightcap National Park?
Minyon Falls walking track is the main one: about 2.6 km each way, 1.5–2.5 h return, steep and slippery when wet. For something easier, the Big Scrub loop takes 1–1.5 h, and Protesters Falls is a gentle 1–1.5 h walk from the Terania Creek side.
When is the best time to visit Nightcap National Park?
April, May, September and October: mild, mostly dry and the falls still have flow. February is the wettest month and the worst for the tracks; July and August are the driest and clearest but the falls run low.
Do I need a guide or a permit?
No. The tracks are signed and open to walkers. You only need permission for drones or commercial filming, and a booking if you camp outside the park.
Can I swim at Minyon Falls?
Sometimes. The plunge pool is swimmable when the water is low and clear, but never after heavy rain or when the creek is in flood.
How far is Nightcap from Byron Bay?
