  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge protects the Blackjack Peninsula and its surrounding marsh, islands and bays on the Texas coast between Rockport and Galveston. It is the main wintering ground of the whooping crane, which arrives from Canada in late October and leaves by April, and it holds large colonies of pelicans, herons, egrets and other waterbirds. Visitors see the refuge from a 16 km one-way auto tour loop and a few short, flat trails; the crane flats and shoreline are closed to people and are viewed only from platforms. There is no camping or lodging on the refuge, and no public transport reaches it.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The auto loop and the visitor contact station are usable by car, with restrooms at the entrance area.
  • Heron Flats Trail is flat but unpaved; a wheelchair may manage the first section in dry weather (check).
  • No public transport reaches the refuge; a private vehicle is required.

Visiting lightly

  • Keep to trails and platforms so the crane flats stay undisturbed.
  • Pack out all rubbish; bins are limited.
  • Support crane conservation by booking licensed boat operators rather than chasing birds by road.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Aransas National Wildlife Refuge?

A per-vehicle day fee of about US$5–10 (2026 estimate) covers a car and its occupants; walkers and cyclists pay less. The America the Beautiful annual pass covers the fee. Check the current amount on the refuge site before you go.

What are the best hikes in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge?

When is the best time to visit Aransas National Wildlife Refuge?

November to March, when the whooping cranes are on the flats and the weather is mild. December to February gives the highest crane numbers. June to September is hot, humid and mosquito-heavy.

Can I see whooping cranes from the refuge?

Do I need a reservation or permit?

No reservation for normal visiting; you pay the entrance fee at the station. Hunting, fishing, filming and research need permits from the refuge office.

Is there camping or lodging in the refuge?
