Destination OS · Medieval lanes, creative yards
Tallinn
Tallinn is a compact old town with a creative district next door: do the hill and the Town Hall Square by midday, avoid the lanes when cruise ships land, and use the tram for Kadriorg.

- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
- Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
- Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
- Estonia ↗Estonia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Estonian sources for your passport.
- Estonia ↗The land border with Russia is not a route for casual travel; check your government's advice before going near it.
- Estonia ↗Winter tyres are required in the cold months; rental cars include them, but confirm if you drive.
- Tallinn and the north coast ↗Book Helsinki ferry tickets ahead in summer; check the last return before you cross.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Tallinn's Old Town is small and steep in places, and busy when cruise ships are in port. The trips that go wrong drag bags over cobbles, visit in December without daylight, or skip Telliskivi and Kalamaja next door. Four clusters cover a first visit; Lahemaa National Park and Helsinki by ferry are trips from one kept bed.
Fits
- Short city breaks
- Medieval-town and design trips
- Travellers heading on to Helsinki or Riga
Does not fit

- Don't confuse
- Vanalinn is the whole Old Town; Toompea is the upper hill, and the lower town is the trading quarter below it.

Off the map: Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (TLL) (15–30 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Toompea Hill: Morning cluster on the upper town: the cathedral, viewing platforms and the castle lanes; steep from the lower town and windy in winter.
- Telliskivi Creative City & Kalamaja: Afternoon and evening cluster: the former factory yards of cafés, studios and food stalls, and the wooden houses of Kalamaja; flat, 1.5 km from the Old Town.
- Old Town & Town Hall Square: Base cluster: the medieval lower town, the Town Hall Square and Viru Street; busy when cruise ships are in port.
- Kadriorg Park & Kumu: Half-day cluster east of the centre: the palace, the park and the Kumu art museum; reach it by tram.
- Sleep area Old Town (Vanalinn): suits Families, price band $$.
- Sleep area Telliskivi & Kalamaja: suits Families, older travellers, wheelchair users, price band $$.
- Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (TLL), 15–30 min by the usual route.
