Nha Trang is Vietnam's busiest dive town, with a dozen or more shops running daily boats to Hòn Mun, a rocky island in the bay that became the country's first marine protected area in 2001. The diving is gentle and good for training: small reef fish, nudibranchs, moray eels and patches of hard and soft coral. Heavy boat traffic and past overfishing mean it is not a reef for big animals. It is a sensible place to get certified before heading to Côn Đảo or abroad.

How to choose an operator
Nha Trang has many dive shops along Trần Phú and Biệt Thự streets. Prices are low and quality varies more than prices do; choose on safety, not on the cheapest boat.
- 1Instructors hold a current teaching status with a recognised agency (PADI, SSI or similar); ask to see the card and check it online.
- 2Your course or fun dive has a stated group size: no more than four students per instructor for training, six divers per guide for fun dives.
- 3Equipment is serviced: regulators breathe smoothly, tank pressure is checked in front of you, and there is a spare mask and computer to hire.
- 4The boat carries oxygen, a first-aid kit and a radio, and the crew can tell you the nearest recompression chamber.
- 5Briefings name the site, depth limit, turn pressure and what to do if separated.
- 6Your insurance covers diving to the depth you plan; many travel policies need an add-on.

- Keep fins off the reef; ask for a weight check on your first dive so you are not dragging along the bottom.
- Refuse boats that feed fish or let snorkellers stand on coral.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest.
- Do not buy coral, shells or dried seahorses sold in the city.

Is Nha Trang a good place to learn?
Yes, for the calm, shallow training sites and low prices. Do not expect big-animal diving; that comes later elsewhere.
When is the sea too rough?
Mostly October to January. February to September is the dive season, with March to June usually the best.
Can I snorkel instead?
Yes. Bay boat trips stop at Hòn Mun's Coral Garden, and the water is warm year round; visibility is better in the morning.
