Buffalo National River

Entry is free — no gate, no ticket. Spend one day: drive to Ponca for Lost Valley's cave-and-waterfall loop (3.4 km (2.1 mi), 2–3 h), or float a half-day stretch from Ponca or Pruitt. Come April–June or September–October; skip summer weekends and any day within 48 h of heavy rain, when the river runs too high or too low to float.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

The Buffalo is the first US National River (1972) and one of the last free-flowing, undammed rivers in the lower 48. It runs about 212 km (132 mi) through the Ozarks of northern Arkansas, past limestone bluffs, springs and more than 300 caves, with three designated wilderness areas inside the boundary. There is no entrance station and no entrance fee: you pay for camping, boat rental or a shuttle, not for the park. Most visitors come for two things — a short trail to a bluff shelter or waterfall, and a float on the river itself.

Safety

River level high

Check the USGS gauge and the weather before any float. Outfitters stop renting when the water is too high or too low; do not paddle a rising river.

Flash floods high

Ozark storms drop rain fast. Never camp in a dry wash or on a low gravel bar if rain is forecast upstream.

Remote trails medium

Phone signal is patchy in the hollows. Tell someone your route and carry more water than you think you need.

Heat and humidity medium

July and August are hot and humid; start early, and expect ticks and chiggers on overgrown trails.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The River Overlook Trail at Tyler Bend is wheelchair accessible for its first half, including the Collier Homestead and first overlook.
  • The Cedar Glade picnic area and the Koen Interpretive Trail near Jasper are accessible.
  • Lost Valley, Indian Rockhouse and the Buffalo River Trail are rough, rocky and not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Pack out everything, including food scraps; the river is the water supply downstream.
  • Use an outfitter shuttle or carpool — parking at popular access points fills on summer weekends.
  • Stay on marked trails to limit erosion on the bluff-edge paths.
  • Keep to the caves that are open; closed caves protect bats from white-nose syndrome.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Buffalo National River?

Nothing. There is no entrance fee and no entrance station. You pay only for extras: camping (about US$20–30 a site per night, 2026 estimate), canoe or kayak rental (about US$50–90 a day) and an outfitter shuttle (about US$20–45 a person).

What are the best hikes in Buffalo National River?

For a short walk, Lost Valley Trail (3.4 km round trip) gives you a natural bridge, a bluff shelter and a cave with an internal waterfall. Indian Rockhouse at Buffalo Point (5.6 km) and the River Overlook Trail at Tyler Bend (1.8 km) are the other easy options. For a multi-day walk, the Buffalo River Trail runs about 60 km from Boxley Valley to Pruitt.

When is the best time to visit Buffalo National River?

April to June and September to October. Spring brings wildflowers and reliable water for floating; autumn brings dry trails and colour. July and August are hot and the river often runs too low to paddle. Winter is quiet but cold, with some services closed.

Can I float the river without experience?

Yes, on the gentler stretches. The Buffalo has Class I–II riffles and no whitewater, so beginners manage a half-day float from Ponca or Pruitt. Water level decides everything: check the gauge and the forecast, and let an outfitter advise you before you launch.

Do I need a permit to camp?

Developed campgrounds take a fee and some can be reserved. Backcountry camping along the river needs a free self-issued permit, available at trailheads and access points. Carry it with you.

Where should I base myself?

Harrison is the largest town and the park headquarters, 40–60 minutes from the middle district. Jasper and Ponca are closer to the upper district and Lost Valley; Yellville and Flippin suit the lower district around Buffalo Point.
