Sallandse Heuvelrug is a glacial moraine in an otherwise flat country: a low ridge of heath, sand drifts and pine forest between Nijverdal and Holten, protected as a national park since 2004. The 75.5 m Koningsbelt is the high point, and the open heath gives views over central Overijssel that no polder can match. It matters most for one thing: the last black grouse in the Netherlands live here, along with nightjars, lizards and grazing sheep and Highland cattle. Two train stations, Nijverdal in the north and Holten in the south, put trailheads within a 20–25 minute walk, and there is no gate, no ticket and no fee.

Accessibility
- The Buitencentrum area, the Speelbospad and the Noetselerberg viewpoint are reachable on firm paths with short walks from parking.
- A dedicated parking spot for disabled visitors and people over 65 sits further in near the Noetselerberg, with a permit from the Buitencentrum (check).
- The Koningsbelt and the sandy ATB routes are steep and loose; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
Visiting lightly
- Use the train to Nijverdal or Holten and the OV-Fiets or a local rental instead of driving to the trailhead.
- Keep to marked routes so heath and breeding habitat are not trampled.
- Do not join or promote black grouse viewing; the remaining birds need undisturbed leks.
- Buy lunch and supplies in Nijverdal, Holten, Rijssen or Hellendoorn rather than expecting facilities inside the park.

How much does it cost to enter Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park?
Nothing. There is no gate or ticket; walking and cycling in the park are free, and parking at the support points such as Buitencentrum, De Pas, Helhuizen, Zuibroek and Noetsele is free. You pay only for extras: bike rental (about €13–35 per day, 2026 estimate), the Natuurmuseum Holterberg (about €5.50–7.95) or the Hellendoorn Adventure Park.
What are the best hikes in Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park?
From the Buitencentrum, the walk up to the Noetselerberg viewpoint (61 m) gives the quickest wide view, and the longer route south to the Koningsbelt (75.5 m) is the high point of the ridge. Families can use the 2 km Speelbospad play forest at the visitor centre, and the Holterberg woods near Holten link to the Natuurmuseum and the Canadian war cemetery.
When is the best time to visit Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park?
Late August and September for the heather in bloom, ideally on a weekday morning before the car parks fill. May and June are green and quiet with long evenings for nightjars. November to February is wet, muddy and grey with short days.
Do I need a car to visit the park?
No. Nijverdal station is about 1.3 km (18 min) on foot from the Buitencentrum, with bus 513 covering the same stretch in 5 minutes on weekdays. From Holten station it is 1.7 km north to the Natuurmuseum and the southern trails. There is no public transport inside the park, so a rental bike helps.
Can I see the black grouse?
Almost certainly not, and you should not try. The park holds the last black grouse in the Netherlands, a handful of sensitive birds. Lek sites are not published and disturbance is a real threat; the heath, nightjars, lizards and grazing animals are what most visitors actually see.
Where can I park and is it free?
The main support points are Buitencentrum on the Nijverdalsebergweg, De Pas near Haarle, Helhuizen in the west, Zuibroek on the Bathemerweg and Noetsele on the Holterweg. Parking is free at these; the disabled and 65+ spot near the Noetselerberg needs a permit from the Buitencentrum (check).
