Nara was Japan's capital in the 8th century and keeps its temples and shrines clustered in and around a single park rather than scattered across the city. Todai-ji houses a 15 m bronze Buddha inside one of the world's largest wooden buildings, over a thousand free-roaming deer approach visitors for crackers, and Kasuga Taisha's lantern-lined paths and Kofuku-ji's five-storey pagoda are both a short walk away.

Getting around
Nara Park and its temples form one walkable area, best covered on foot at an easy pace over 3–4 hours; buses run to Isuien Garden and a few more distant temples. Kintetsu Nara Line trains run direct from Kyoto (about 45 min) and Osaka-Namba (about 35–40 min); there is no airport, so arrival is by train only, via Kansai (KIX) or Itami (ITM) airport into Kyoto or Osaka.

Watch out
- Deer may bite, headbutt or nudge for food: buy crackers (shika senbei) from park vendors, hold them flat and let go once a deer approaches, and keep other food and paper out of sight.
- The park is busiest with tour groups from mid-morning to mid-afternoon: arrive at opening for a calmer visit and better deer behaviour.
- There is no airport nearby — build in the extra 35–45 minute train ride from Kyoto or Osaka rather than trying to arrive independently.
