  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arlington is a county that works like a city, directly across the Potomac from Washington, DC, and stitched to it by the Metrorail. Most visitors come for Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, then discover that hotels along the Orange, Silver, Blue and Yellow lines are cheaper than downtown DC and just as quick to the Smithsonian. It is dense, walkable in patches, and best treated as a base with two or three sights of its own.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Use the Metrorail: Orange and Silver lines run Rosslyn–Court House–Clarendon–Virginia Square–Ballston; Blue and Yellow lines run Rosslyn–Arlington Cemetery–Pentagon–Pentagon City–Crystal City–DCA. Fares start at $2 and rise by distance and time of day (2026 estimate). Metrobus and the green Arlington Transit (ART) buses fill the gaps and accept the SmarTrip card. Capital Bikeshare docks sit near most Metro stations, and the Mount Vernon Trail runs along the river. Driving is a liability: parking is scarce and tickets are enforced hard.

Ballston

West end of the corridor; slightly cheaper rooms, more shops, 20 min to DC by Metro.

Watch out

Safety

Arlington is consistently safer than neighbouring Washington, DC, and normal city precautions cover it. The real annoyances are parking tickets, aggressive drivers at crosswalks and late-night bar bills: check the total before you order.
  • Metro closes around 23:00 Sun, 23:30 Mon–Thu and 01:00 Fri–Sat; last-train times are posted in each station.
  • Parking in residential blocks is permit-only on weekday working hours and strictly ticketed.
  • Arlington Cemetery is an active burial ground: keep quiet, stay on paths, and check the official site for changing security rules.
  • Pentagon tours need advance booking through the official channel; walk-up entry is not possible.
  • Crosswalks near Rosslyn and the bridges see aggressive drivers even when you have the light.
