Destination OS · Baixa mornings, prawns by the bay

Maputo

Maputo is a two-day city: walk the Baixa (fort, market, Iron House, cathedral) in the morning, rest through the heat, ride a taxi to dinner, and never walk between the two after dark.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Mozambique ↗Many Western passports are visa-exempt for 30 days but still need an approved travel authorisation from the official evisa.gov.mz portal before departure; it cannot be bought on arrival.
  • Mozambique ↗Carry your passport or a certified copy at all times; police document checks are common.
  • Mozambique ↗Governments advise against travel to parts of Cabo Delgado province in the north; check your own government's advice for the exact areas.
  • Maputo and the Deep South ↗Do not drive between Maputo and the southern beaches after dark; potholes, animals and unlit vehicles make night driving the main road risk.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Maputo's sights sit in a few hundred metres of grid-plan streets, so a first visit is short and easy in daylight. Trips go wrong on the edges: a midday walk in the humid season, a suitcase in a shared minibus (chapa), a phone in hand after dark, and no ride arranged from the airport. Four small clusters cover the centre; Ponta do Ouro and Tofo are trips away from a kept bed.

Fits

  • Short city breaks before the beaches
  • Architecture and history walkers
  • Seafood trips

Does not fit

  • Travellers who want to walk at night
  • Strollers and wheelchairs (broken pavements)
  • Anyone planning to drive the coast in one day
2 days
Baixa morning, fort and station, museum; seafood dinner by taxi

Don't confuse
Maputo is the capital (Baixa is the old centre); Matola is a separate city to the west; Ponta do Ouro and Tofo are beach towns hours away.

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Baixa (Independence Square): Morning cluster: Casa de Ferro, the cathedral and Independence Square, then Mercado Central; flat, grid streets, shade under the trees; 2–3 hours.
  • Fortaleza and Central Station: Late-morning cluster: the fort on the waterfront and the railway station on Praça dos Trabalhadores; flat and open, little shade; 90 minutes.
  • Museu Nacional de Arte: Half-morning cluster: the national art museum and the avenue north of the Baixa; quiet, gentle slope, some shade; 90 minutes.
  • Polana (evening): Evening cluster: the Polana area east of the centre with hotels, cafés and bay views; take a taxi in and out, walk only inside the cluster before dark.
  • Sleep area Baixa (city centre): suits Families, solo on a budget, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Polana (bay side): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
  • Maputo International Airport (MPM), 25–50 min by the usual route.

Decide

  • Small distances

You will hate

  • Pavements with holes
  • Being unable to walk at night

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster in daylight; taxi between clusters and after dark.
Passes
No pass. Agree the taxi fare before you get in or use a ride-hailing app if it works on your SIM.
Last trains
No metro or timetable to plan around; taxis are the after-dark option.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Chapas (shared minibuses) are crowded and not for suitcases: use a taxi or a pre-booked car whenever you carry luggage.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding service culture; keep the big bag at the Maputo hotel for trips away.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and keep a room for a shower; some charge a fee.
