Know before you go

  • Built about 1739 and named Honen Dalim ("He who is merciful"), it is among the oldest synagogue sites in the Americas.
  • In the 1700s a large share of the island trade was Jewish-run, and this was the centre of that community. The building was abandoned after the island was sacked in 1781.
  • Only walls, a tower and a few architectural details remain. Read the panel or bring a guide to picture the interior.
  • There is little shade. Go early.
  • Photograph the walls and the tower, but do not lean on them.
