Carrizo Plain is a flat, dry grassland basin between the Caliente and Temblor ranges, about 75 miles inland from San Luis Obispo. It is run by the Bureau of Land Management, not the National Park Service, so there is no entrance gate, no entrance fee and no shuttle. What it does have: Soda Lake, a normally dry lakebed of about 3,000 acres; Painted Rock, a pictograph site that needs a permit or a guided tour; and Wallace Creek, where the San Andreas Fault has bent a stream channel sideways. Roads are the main constraint. Only the northern 18 miles of Soda Lake Road are paved, and clay-surfaced side roads turn to grease after rain.

- Stay on designated roads
- Motor vehicles must stay on designated roads; the clay side roads are easily ruined and easily trap a car.
- Speed limit
- 25 mph on BLM roads and 55 mph on county roads unless posted otherwise; Soda Lake Road has a record of rollover crashes.
- Painted Rock
- Guided tour only from 1 March to 15 July; permit-only self-guided visits from 16 July to the end of February.
- Camping limit
- 14 days in any 30-day period and 28 days per calendar year; dispersed camping only where the BLM map allows it.
- Fires
- A free campfire permit is required for any stove, lantern or fire outside a designated campground; check current restrictions.
- Mountain bikes
- Stay on existing roads and trails; do not cut across the grassland.

Free campground at the foot of the Caliente Mountains on the north end; shade shelters over picnic tables, no trees. The clay access road is impassable for days or weeks after rain — leave at once if it starts raining.

Accessibility

- Soda Lake trail and the Wallace Creek loop are short and mostly level, but surfaces are dirt and gravel.
- Painted Rock involves a walk over uneven ground; ask about access when you book the tour or permit.
- There are no paved paths, boardwalks or shuttle services in the monument.

How much does it cost to enter Carrizo Plain National Monument?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee and no gate — it is BLM land, not a fee-charging national park. Camping at KCL and Selby is also free, and a campfire permit costs nothing. Your real costs are fuel, since the nearest gas is in Santa Margarita, Taft or Maricopa, and any Recreation.gov booking fee for a Painted Rock tour or permit.
What are the best hikes in Carrizo Plain National Monument?
For most visitors the two short interpretive walks are the best value: the 0.9-mile round trip to the edge of Soda Lake, and the 1.4-mile Wallace Creek loop where the San Andreas Fault has offset the creek channel. The Caliente Ridge hike is the serious option — three to five hours, no shade and no water — and the access road has to be dry.
When is the best time to visit Carrizo Plain National Monument?
March and April for wildflowers, if the rain has been right, and October and November for mild, quiet days. Mid-March to mid-April is the usual bloom window but it varies year to year and some years are poor. Avoid July and August, when temperatures pass 38°C and there is no water in the monument.
Do I need a permit for Painted Rock?
Yes, in one form or another. From 1 March to 15 July you can only visit on a BLM-guided tour. From 16 July to the end of February you can go self-guided, but only with a permit. Book through Recreation.gov or by phone, and sometimes in person at the Goodwin Education Center.
Can I drive Soda Lake Road in a normal car?
Yes for the northern 18 miles, which are paved and fine for low-clearance vehicles. The southern stretch is gravel and usually passable when dry, but it has dips and potholes that can damage a car, so keep your speed down. The clay side roads — Caliente Ridge, Selby, Simmler-Soda Lake, San Diego Creek — are impassable when wet.
Is there anywhere to stay or eat in the monument?
No food and no drinking water are sold anywhere in the monument, so bring everything. For sleeping you have the free KCL and Selby campgrounds, mapped dispersed camping, or motels in Taft and inns around Santa Margarita and Paso Robles on the coast side.
Is there cell service?
Very little. Coverage is patchy and mostly limited to the area near California Valley. Tell someone your route and expected return time before you go, because emergency response times here average well over an hour.
