- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
- Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
- Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
- Estonia ↗Estonia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Estonian sources for your passport.
- Estonia ↗The land border with Russia is not a route for casual travel; check your government's advice before going near it.
- Estonia ↗Winter tyres are required in the cold months; rental cars include them, but confirm if you drive.

Lahemaa is Estonia's largest national park and its first, created in 1971 and the first in the former Soviet Union: about 747 km² of coniferous forest, peat bog and coast roughly 50 km east of Tallinn, where four peninsulas (Juminda, Pärispea, Käsmu, Vergi) meet four bays (Kolga, Hara, Eru, Käsmu). Entry is free and the marked trails are open year-round, so the real decision is scope, not cost: the 5.7 km Viru bog boardwalk loop with Estonia's tallest bog tower works as a half-day trip from Tallinn by bus, while the manors at Palmse, Sagadi, Vihula and Kolga, the captains' village at Käsmu and the stony tip at Pärispea need a car and one or two nights. May, June and September give dry boardwalks, long daylight and thin crowds; July and August are warmest but busiest at Viru bog around midday, and November to March is dark, icy and short on open services.

Accessibility
- The first stretch of the Viru bog boardwalk to the tower is a 1 m wooden path, usable by wheelchair with help (check).
- Manor grounds at Palmse and Sagadi are largely level and reachable by car.
- The tower, Kõnnu Suursoo and the boulder beaches are not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on the boardwalks; the bog surface is fragile and recovers slowly.
- Use RMK campsites and fire rings rather than making new fire spots.
- Buy from village cafés and manor shops so the park's communities benefit.
- Keep to open areas in spring so nesting birds on the coast are not disturbed.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Lahemaa National Park?
Nothing. There is no entry fee and all marked trails are free. You pay only for extras: Palmse Manor about €5, the Sagadi Forest Museum about €3, and bus or train fares of roughly €3–4 from Tallinn.
What are the best hikes in Lahemaa National Park?
The 5.7 km Viru bog loop with Estonia's tallest bog tower is the classic and takes 1.5–2 hours. The 12 km Viru long loop adds forest. The 27.5 km Kõnnu Suursoo trail on the park's southern border is the serious one, 6–8 hours with two towers.
When is the best time to visit Lahemaa National Park?
May, June and September: dry boardwalks, long daylight and fewer people. July and August are warmest but busiest, especially at Viru bog around midday. November to March is dark, icy and short on services.
Can I visit Lahemaa without a car?
Yes for Viru bog: buses from Tallinn stop at Loksa tee, 1.3 km from the trailhead. For the manors, Käsmu and the north coast a car is much easier; village buses are sparse.
Can I swim in the bog pools?
People do, at Viru bog, where wooden steps give a safe entry and exit. The water is acidic, dark and cold, and the pools are deep. Do not swim at Kõnnu Suursoo, which has no such steps.
Where should I stay near Lahemaa National Park?
Vihula and Sagadi manors have hotels inside the park, and Võsu and Käsmu have small guesthouses. Many visitors base in Tallinn and day-trip, about an hour each way.
