Langue de Barbarie National Park protects the narrow sand spit that runs south from Saint-Louis, where the Senegal River meets the Atlantic: mangroves, tidal flats, dunes and a nesting island that hosts thousands of gulls and terns from February to late May. It was created in 1976 for sea turtle nesting and migratory birds, and it now records over 160 species. The 2003 canal cut through the peninsula 5 km south of Saint-Louis moved the river mouth north, raised salinity and reshaped the ecology of Gandiol — the villages around the park still live with the consequences. The park is small, flat and cheap to visit; the main decision is whether to take a pirogue to the bird island with a park guide or to walk and cycle the village tracks, lighthouse and salt ponds around Mouit.

How much does it cost to enter Langue de Barbarie National Park?
Park entry is a small fee paid at the Mouit headquarters, in the region of 1,000–2,000 XOF per person (2026 estimate; confirm at the gate). Add a guide, roughly 5,000–15,000 XOF for a half day, and a pirogue to the bird island, roughly 10,000–25,000 XOF per boat. The Gandiol lighthouse and Petit Musée each charge about 500 XOF.
What are the best hikes in Langue de Barbarie National Park?
The flat walk from Mouit to the Lawmare wetland, 1.5–2 hours, is the best birding route on foot. The Gandiol lighthouse and salt ponds loop, 2–3 hours, adds a view over the river and salt pans. Longer walks between Gandiol villages are possible but hot and unshaded; take a guide and water.
When is the best time to visit Langue de Barbarie National Park?
February to May for the bird reproduction island, when gulls and terns nest in succession and end in late May. November to January is cooler and dry with migrants arriving. Avoid July to September: 32–40°C, heavy rain and little breeze.
Can I see sea turtles in the park?
Almost certainly not. Turtles come ashore only to lay eggs and return to the sea. The park monitors tracks on the beach in the morning from July to October, but a sighting is luck. Do not buy turtle shell products in Saint-Louis.
Do I need a guide?
For the bird reproduction island and the mangrove channels, yes — go with a park guide and a pirogue. The village tracks around Mouit and the lighthouse route can be walked alone, though a guide improves the birding and the price is agreed up front.
How do I get to the park from Saint-Louis?
Take a taxi or bush taxi south to Mouit, about 30–45 minutes, then walk to the park entrance. A return taxi for the day costs more than a shared bush taxi; bush taxis run in daylight only.
