Ramallah is the administrative seat of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank; Palestine claims Jerusalem as its capital, and Jerusalem's status is disputed. Ramallah is a university and NGO town with a large café and restaurant scene, well beyond its role as a government centre.

Yellow service taxis (shared minivans) and private taxis cover the town and routes to Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nablus; there is no rail or metro. Entry and exit go through Israeli-controlled checkpoints such as Qalandiya, where wait times vary widely.

  • Qalandiya and other checkpoints can add hours to a short trip; build in buffer time.
  • There is no independent airport: all overland entry passes through Israeli-controlled crossings.
  • Friday is the main weekly holiday; many shops and offices close or shorten hours.
