Give Raleigh 2 nights: one downtown day for the free state museums and Capitol, one for Oakwood or Umstead. It is a base, not a headline stop.
Raleigh is North Carolina's capital and the biggest city of the Research Triangle, but it is a government and university town rather than a sightseeing one. The draw is a compact downtown of free state museums, a working 1840 Capitol and restored historic neighbourhoods, plus NC State's campus and a fast-growing food and brewery scene. Most travellers use it as a 2-night base for the Triangle, with Durham and Chapel Hill 30–45 minutes away by car or bus.

Get around
Downtown is walkable on a one-way grid, and GoRaleigh runs city buses plus a free downtown circulator (check whether the R-Line is still running). GoTriangle links Raleigh with Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and RDU. Wolfline is free around NC State. A car makes the Triangle far easier: Durham is about 30–40 min on I-40, Chapel Hill about 40–50 min. Parking downtown is metered on weekdays and enforcement and towing are strict.
