Rajahmundry sits on the Godavari river in central Andhra Pradesh and calls itself the state's cultural capital — the birthplace of the Telugu poet Nannayya. It is a working textile and market city, not a sightseeing town: the draw is the river, the barrage, the ghats and the temple circuit around it. Most travellers pass through on the Kolkata–Chennai rail and road corridor, or use it as the launch point for a Papikondalu river cruise.

Get around
Autos are the cheap default — fix the fare before you get in and show the driver the address. Taxis wait at the railway station. The city is spread out along the river, so plan each half-day around one cluster rather than criss-crossing.

- River ghats have slippery steps and no railings in places.
Rajahmundry is a normal Indian mid-size city and safe by day; the real risks are heat, monsoon flooding on the ghats, and auto drivers quoting a tourist rate. Women travelling alone should avoid unlit riverfront stretches after dark.
