Rainbow Beach, Queensland
Rainbow Beach
Give Rainbow Beach 2 nights: one full day for Carlo Sand Blow and the coloured sands, one for a K'gari 4WD day tour. Skip it if you have no car or no 4WD plan.
Rainbow Beach is a small Fraser Coast town of about 1,250 people, 75 km off the Bruce Highway near Gympie and the southern access point for K'gari (Fraser Island). It works as a two-night stop for sand blows, coloured cliffs and 4WD beach driving, not as a beach-resort holiday: the town is one short street, the surf is often rough, and the nearest full supermarket is 25 km away at Cooloola Cove. Come with a car, or on the daily coach, and book K'gari tours ahead.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Beach driving needs a permit and low tide: check tide times and get a permit before you go.
- K'gari 4WD tours and barge crossings sell out in school holidays: book ahead.
- Surf can be rough with rips; swim between the flags near the surf club.
- No full supermarket or pharmacy in town: stock up at Cooloola Cove or Gympie.
- Mobile coverage is patchy in the national park and on the beach north of town.
Low crime, high environment risk: the real dangers are rips and rough surf, beach driving on the wrong tide, and heat on exposed sand walks. Tell someone your plan before heading into the national park.
