Rai Valley
Stop for 1–2 hours on the SH6 drive between Nelson and Havelock, or sleep one night if you want Okiwi Bay and French Pass the next morning.
Rai Valley is a small farming settlement on State Highway 6, about 40 minutes from Nelson and 25 minutes from Havelock, and the turn-off for the western Marlborough Sounds. There is almost nothing here as a destination in itself: a general store, a tavern, a historic cottage and a rural show day. Its value is as a leg-stretch on the Nelson–Blenheim drive and as a cheap bed before the French Pass road.

Get around
You need a car. SH6 runs through the valley and the Okiwi Bay / French Pass turn-off is about 1 minute west of the township. There is no local public transport; intercity coaches and shuttles on the Picton–Blenheim–Havelock–Nelson route run via Renwick, so check whether your service stops in the valley. Expect one-lane bridges and stock on the road.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel and groceries are limited: fill up and shop in Nelson, Havelock or Blenheim (check what the local store stocks).
- Phone coverage on the French Pass and Tennyson Inlet roads: check with your network before you turn off SH6.
- One-lane bridges on SH6 and the side roads: pull over and let trucks pass.
- Heavy rain can close the side roads and flood the valley floor; check road conditions before driving to French Pass.
Very low crime; the real risks are the road (one-lane bridges, trucks, wet gravel) and weather that changes fast. Tell someone your route if you drive to French Pass, and carry water and a jacket.
