Raglan
Rhaglan
Give Raglan half a day: Raglan Castle takes 2–3 hours, the village about 1 hour. Sleep in Monmouth or Abergavenny; village beds are few — check before you count on one.
Raglan is a small Monmouthshire village of about 2,000 people on the A40 between Monmouth and Abergavenny, and it exists on the traveller's map for one reason: Raglan Castle, a late-medieval fortress with a great gatehouse and a hexagonal keep that still stands several storeys high. The village itself is a pub, a church, a hotel and a few streets. Come for the castle, eat lunch, and move on — or use it as a half-day stop while driving between the Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons.

Get around
Raglan is a driving village: the A40 runs through it and the A449 to Newport joins just east. On foot the village and the castle are close together — allow a short walk, check the route on a map. Buses on the Monmouth–Abergavenny corridor stop in the village, but service is sparse and not useful for a tight itinerary — check current timetables before relying on them. Taxis come from Monmouth or Abergavenny; book ahead.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Bus service on the Monmouth–Abergavenny route is infrequent and has changed operators; check the current timetable before planning around it.
- Raglan Castle is a Cadw site with seasonal opening hours and an admission charge; check the official Cadw page for the day you plan to visit.
- Castle Farmhouse is a private building — view it from the road only.
- Village pavements are narrow and the A40 carries fast traffic; take care walking between the castle and the village centre.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the surrounding lanes; download offline maps before you drive.
Raglan is a quiet, low-crime village and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the fast A40 through the village, uneven castle masonry and wet stone steps, and getting stranded after the last bus if you arrive without a car.
