Raglan
Whāingaroa
Give Raglan 2 nights if you surf or walk; 1 night is enough if you only want the town, the harbour and one beach.
Raglan is a small west-coast town on a harbour mouth, about 45 minutes from Hamilton on State Highway 23. It is known for its left-hand surf breaks, its arts and market scene, and short walks to waterfalls and a gorge. There is no public transport inside town, so a car or the shuttle decides what you can do.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Surf breaks sit over rock and strong currents; surf with a school or a local if you are new.
- The Karioi summit track is rough and takes about 3 h each way: start early, carry water.
- Te Toto Gorge track is steep and partly overgrown; do not count on a marked loop.
- Accommodation is scarce from mid-December to the end of January: book ahead.
- Left-hand driving, one-lane bridges and unsealed roads on the Whaanga Road side.
Raglan is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are the sea (rocks, rips, cold water), rough bush tracks and the drive on narrow, unsealed roads. Swim between the flags or with a school.
