Raetihi
One night, or skip: Raetihi is a cheaper bed for Tongariro and the Ruapehu ski fields, 11 km from Ohakune. Base here only if you drive.
Raetihi is a small former timber town on State Highway 4 in the Ruapehu District, 11 km from Ohakune and roughly 20–25 minutes by car from the Tongariro National Park entrances. It has a handful of sights, a country calendar of events and beds that undercut the ski centres in winter. Without a car it is a thin stop; with one it works as a quiet, cheaper base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Ruapehu skiing and the Whanganui River road.

- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Without a car you are limited to the bus timetable and a small town centre.
- Winter brings ice, fog and occasional snow on SH4 and the Ohakune road: check the road before you drive at dawn.
- Small-town hours are short and seasonal; cafés and the museum close on some days, so check before you build a day around them.
- Fuel and groceries are limited; fill up in Ohakune or National Park Village.
A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on SH4, cold and fog, and having no plan B if the weather closes the mountain.
