Radebeul is a wine town and garden suburb on the Elbe between Dresden and Meißen, 15–30 minutes by S-Bahn or tram from central Dresden. It is the richest town in eastern Germany, home of the Karl May Museum and the steam-hauled Lößnitzgrundbahn to Moritzburg. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day trip from Dresden; one night works if you want a vineyard tasting and the steam train on the same day.

Get around
Tram 4 runs the length of the lower town from Dresden and is the main link; the S1 S-Bahn stops at Radebeul-Weintraube, Radebeul-Ost and Radebeul-Kötzschenbroda. Buses 72 and 476 serve the theatre and the upper vineyards. The town is spread out along the Elbe, so plan on tram or bike rather than walking between sights.

- Radebeul is a residential town: last tram and S-Bahn back to Dresden run around midnight, so check the timetable before a late dinner.

- The Lößnitzgrundbahn is a seasonal heritage service with a handful of trains a day, not a commuter line: check the day's departures and buy a return.
- Schloss Wackerbarth's restaurant closes on Mondays, and on Mondays and Tuesdays in February and March, and all of January.
Very safe, low-crime residential town. Real risks are the Elbe cycle path after dark, uneven vineyard paths, and the last-tram problem: miss it and a taxi back to Dresden costs real money.
