Quorn

Quorn is a small railway town on the edge of the Flinders Ranges, about 30 minutes from Port Augusta and 4 hours from Adelaide by car. It is the southern gateway to the ranges and home to the Pichi Richi Railway heritage line. There is no public transport: you need a car. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a half-day detour.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you cannot reach Quorn or leave it.
- Summer heat: Dec–Feb regularly tops 40°C; carry 4 L of water per person per day on any walk.
- Fuel and food hours are limited; the nearest 24 h fuel is Port Augusta.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before you leave.
- Kangaroos and emus on the road at dawn and dusk: slow down.
Quorn is a small, quiet town and feels safe. The real risks are summer heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk: carry water, fuel up early and do not walk in the ranges alone in January.
