Southeast, Quezon City: neighborhood guide

Southeast Quezon City is seven barangays in three parts. The west is Camp Aguinaldo and Camp Crame, the national headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. The east is Libis and Bagumbayan, a former industrial strip now built up around Eastwood City. In between sit St. Ignatius, White Plains and Ugong Norte, gated communities among the most exclusive addresses in the country.

Most of this land belonged to neighbouring Pasig until Quezon City was created in the 1930s, and it stayed lightly developed well into the 20th century. That history shows: wide roads, walls, malls and offices rather than a street grid you wander. Expect to move between clusters by vehicle, not on foot.

Choose this area if your trip is built around Eastwood City — dinner, drinks, a cinema, a hotel above it all — or if you have business at Camp Aguinaldo or Camp Crame. White Plains and Ugong Norte also suit travellers who value a quiet, guarded street over a central location and are happy to pay for taxis.

Skip it on a first Manila trip if you want to walk out to food, markets and rail. There are no budget hotels here; the nearest cheap beds are in Cubao, and the Triangle and Scout Areas give you more restaurants within walking distance. The trade-off is real: you get space and calm, you lose convenience.

Dampa sa Libis is the local institution: a seafood market and a row of restaurants under one roof, with a hall that seats hundreds. You buy fish and shellfish at the market, then pay a restaurant to cook it your way. It is on Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. Avenue in Bagumbayan and runs daily from late morning to late evening (check hours).

Katipunan Avenue and Eastwood City cover the rest. Agezuki in White Plains does sushi and sashimi at mid-range prices, with lunch and dinner services. Apero at Corinthian Hills in Ugong Norte is a café and bakery with French-leaning plates and long hours from breakfast. For drinks, 78-53-86 in White Plains West is a jazz bar with cocktails, imported whiskey and a large vinyl collection, open from mid-afternoon until past midnight.

Santolan–Annapolis station on MRT Line 3 serves the northwest corner of the area, near Camp Crame and the EDSA side. From there you still need a taxi for White Plains, Ugong Norte or Eastwood. Eastwood City is the transport hub for buses and jeepneys, mostly heading to other parts of Quezon City, Pasig or Marikina; a Citylink service runs to Ninoy Aquino International Airport via Taguig in peak hours except Sundays (check schedules).

Inside the gated barangays and inside Eastwood City, public transport does not operate. There is an informal motorcycle-taxi (habal-habal) stand on Katipunan Avenue in White Plains, in front of a 7-Eleven, but the practical answer is a taxi or ride-hailing app. Budget for traffic: EDSA and Katipunan clog badly at rush hour, and the planned Metro Manila Subway station at Camp Aguinaldo is not expected before 2032 (check).
