Queralbs
Go for a half-day or a full day if you ride the rack railway to Vall de Núria; skip if you only want Pyrenees hiking without the train.
Queralbs is a tiny stone village in the Girona Pyrenees, the gateway to the Vall de Núria rack railway — Spain's only cogwheel train. The village itself has a Romanesque church and narrow lanes, but the main draw is the 40-minute train ride up to the Núria valley sanctuary and ski area. Most visitors come for a morning or afternoon, then move on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Mobile signal is almost non-existent in Queralbs and on the approach road; finish calls before Ribes de Freser.
- The rack railway schedule varies by season and maintenance; check the official site before travelling.
- Ski resort prices include the rack railway ticket — check if you already have a return train ticket.
Very safe; the main risks are slippery paths in wet weather and the lack of mobile signal for emergencies. Carry a paper map if hiking.
