Quarto d'Altino
Skip as a destination; use only for the train station or the archaeology museum if you have a spare half-day between Venice and the mainland.
Quarto d'Altino is a small commuter town on the Venice mainland, best known for its railway station (a stop for regional trains to Venice, Jesolo and the coast) and the National Archaeological Museum of Altino. There is no old town, no nightlife and little to do beyond the museum. Most travellers pass through or skip it entirely.

- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
