Qualicum Beach
Give it one full day and one night: beach walk, Milner Gardens, downtown. Two nights only if you golf or use it as a Parksville base.
Qualicum Beach is a small east-coast Vancouver Island town of about 9,000 people, 35 minutes north of Nanaimo on Highway 19 (exit 60). It is a summer beach and golf stop rather than a destination in itself: a long sand beach, a bluff-top garden, a walkable downtown and one of British Columbia's oldest public golf courses. Most travellers see it in a day, or sleep here while exploring the Parksville and Coombs area.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread along Highway 19A and the beach. BC Transit runs local routes in the Regional District of Nanaimo, including an intercity route to Nanaimo, but service is limited and does not cover everything.

- Beach water stays cold even in August; the Strait of Georgia is not a warm-water swim.
Very safe for a small Canadian town; the real issues are cold ocean water, fast Highway 19 traffic and deer on the road at dusk.
