Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be here (Camp Humphreys, a ferry to China, family). Otherwise use it as a 2–3 h Line 1 stop from Suwon or Seoul.
Pyeongtaek is a Gyeonggi transport hub of about 460,000 people, best known for Camp Humphreys and Osan Air Base. Sights are spread across a wide, flat city and reward a car or a long taxi ride. Most travellers pass through on Line 1 or the SRT; a half day covers the centre, and one night is enough if you are catching the Yantai ferry. The Special Tourist Zone in Songtan caters heavily to US military personnel with bars and restaurants, while the wider city offers lakeside parks, Confucian academies, and temples. Because attractions like Pyeongtaek Lake and the ferry terminal are far from the station, walking is limited to the downtown core around Pyeongtaek Station and Songtan.

Get around
Line 1 links Pyeongtaek, Songtan, Seojeong-ri and Jije stations, and runs to Suwon, Anyang and Seoul. Local green buses cover the city; blue and red buses go to Seoul. Taxis are cheap and the usual way to reach Pyeongtaek Lake or the ferry terminal. The city is flat and walkable near the centre, with shared bikes.

- Distances are long: Pyeongtaek Lake and the ferry terminal are 20–40 min by taxi from the station, not a walk.
- The ferry terminal building is separate from the berth; check-in can start hours before sailing and a shuttle may run between them.
- Bus stops named for the port or passenger terminal are not always at the terminal building: confirm with the ferry company and a live bus app.
- Some bars in the Songtan zone post no prices; ask the total before you order.
- Summer humidity is high and July–August rain is heavy; carry a compact umbrella.
A safe, ordinary Gyeonggi city; the real risks are long unlit stretches near the lake at night, traffic on wide roads, and Songtan bars with no posted prices. Emergency numbers work in English via 1330.
