Put-in-Bay
Put-in-Bay, Ohio
Go for one night, May–September, and leave the car on the mainland: ferries run from Catawba, Port Clinton and Sandusky in 18–45 min.
Put-in-Bay is the village on South Bass Island, 3 mi (5 km) off the Ohio shore in Lake Erie, and the name is used for the whole island. It has been a summer resort since the mid-1800s: taverns, wineries, a national peace memorial and a state-park campground. The season runs roughly April to October, and most of the 500 full-time residents stay through winter. One night covers the village; two if you want the caves, the lighthouse and a slow afternoon on the water.

Get around
Leave the car on the mainland: island parking is very limited and speed limits are low. Rent a golf cart (2-, 4-, 6- and 8-passenger), a bicycle or a moped in the village, or use the taxis and old-school buses that meet the Miller ferry at the Lime Kiln dock for the 3 km (2 mi) run into town. The island is about 5 km (3 mi) across, so a cart covers it in a morning.Leave the car on the mainland: island parking is very limited and speed limits are low. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Bringing a car costs $15 one-way on Miller plus $7 per person, and island parking is scarce; restrictions apply at peak times.
- Ferry schedules thin out in spring and autumn and depend on weather; the last boat back is early evening on many shoulder-season days.
- Summer weekends fill the village with day-trippers and bar crowds; hotel prices and ferry queues peak.
- Winter shuts most businesses and some services; the island is not a cold-weather destination.
- Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy at the south end and the campground.
Very safe for a resort island: the real risks are alcohol on the water, golf carts on public roads, sunburn and the last ferry. Watch your step on the memorial deck and keep an eye on the weather before any boat leg.
