Purwokerto is a transit town of about 230,000 people in southwestern Central Java, capital of Banyumas Regency and the main rail stop between Jakarta and Yogyakarta. It has no headline sight: the reasons to stop are the Banyumas kitchen (mendoan, sroto Sokaraja, gethuk goreng), a handful of colonial-era buildings and monuments, and the cool resort slopes of Baturraden and Gunung Slamet 14-18 km north. Most travellers pass through in a few hours; one night is enough for the food and the town square, two if you want the mountain.
