Go for 2 nights in Dec–Mar; skip in Jun–Aug when the resort is near-empty and many places shut.
Punta del Este is Uruguay's resort peninsula, 2 h by bus from Montevideo, with a calm bay side (Mansa) and a surf side (Brava) about 20 minutes apart on foot. Two nights covers the beaches, the port and Casapueblo; a third adds La Barra or Isla de Lobos. Outside Dec–Mar it is quiet, cheaper and half-closed.

Get around
The peninsula itself is walkable end to end in about 30–40 minutes. Buses along the coast are infrequent and taxis are expensive by Uruguayan standards, so a car or scooter helps for La Barra, José Ignacio and Punta Ballena. Scooter rental runs about US$10/hour or US$45/day.

- PDP airport has very few winter flights: check schedules before planning around it.
- Summer border crossings from Argentina can add hours by car.
Punta del Este is one of the safer resort towns in South America; the real risks are summer crowds, rip currents on Playa Brava and unposted club bills — ask the total before you order.
