Private transfer. Book with your resort or a known company before you fly. The driver waits in arrivals with a name board, and the price is agreed in advance, which removes the cash-and-language friction at 11pm. This is the default for anyone landing with luggage, children or a late flight.
Airport taxi. PUJ has an official taxi rank outside arrivals with zone-based fares rather than a meter. Confirm the price at the desk before you get in, and keep small notes for the driver. The fare is in the same band as a private transfer, so there is little reason to choose it unless you have not booked anything.
Shared shuttle. Cheaper per person, but you wait for the van to fill and then stop at several resorts. Fine for a solo traveller in daylight with one bag; poor value if you are a group of four, since a private car costs about the same.
Guagua and public buses. The local minibuses are how most Dominicans travel and cost a fraction of a transfer, but they run on fixed routes between towns, are crowded, and are not set up for large suitcases. Use them for daytime hops once you are settled, not for the airport run.
Rental car. Useful if you plan to leave the resort strip for La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís or Santo Domingo. Expect aggressive driving, police stops and poor lighting at night; collect the car in daylight if you can.
Uber and app taxis. Apps work in the Punta Cana area and are often cheaper than the rank for return legs. Airport pick-up is restricted by the taxi unions, so follow the signs to the app zone outside the terminal if you try it.

Tips
Do not book a transfer to "Punta Cana city centre" — no such place exists on the booking forms. Give the driver your hotel or villa name and zone instead.
Landing late? Pre-book. The rank thins out after the last bank of flights, and the resort strip is dark between properties.
If you are heading further afield, the coach terminals for Caribe Tours, Metro Tours and Expreso Bávaro are in the towns, not at the resorts, so you will still need a taxi or transfer to reach them.
Buy a local eSIM or a Dominican SIM at the airport if you want a working map and ride app on arrival.
