Punta Allen
Go for 2–3 nights only if you accept the 40 km dirt road: 1.5–2 h from Tulum, no fuel, no ATM. Otherwise skip and stay in Tulum.
Punta Allen is a fishing village of a few hundred people at the end of a 40 km unpaved road inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, south of Tulum. There is one road in and the same road out, no gas station and no bank. People come for flats fishing on Ascension Bay, empty beaches, birding and doing very little. It is not a resort: power and water are limited, and the trip is the point.

Get around
On foot. The village is small and everything is within a short walk. Boats for fishing, snorkelling or the lagoon leave from the village pier and are arranged through lodges or local captains.

- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration

Scams and watch-outs
- The road south of the Sian Ka'an entrance arch is unpaved: expect 1.5–2 h each way, potholes, and no lanes. Do not drive it in a small sedan.
- No gas station in Punta Allen: fill up in Tulum and carry enough for the round trip.
- No ATM and patchy card acceptance: bring cash in pesos.
- Do not attempt the road during or right after heavy rain; sections flood and turn to mud.
- Sargassum can pile up on the beach in summer and autumn.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check forecasts and your travel insurance before booking.
The village itself is calm and safe for visitors. The real risks are the road (potholes, oncoming trucks, flooding), summer heat and storms, and sunburn on the water. Carry cash, water and a spare tyre.
