Punakha
Spend 1–2 days in Punakha to see the Dzong, suspension bridge and nearby hikes; then continue to other western valleys.
Punakha, former capital of Bhutan, sits in a lush valley between two rivers. Its main draw is the historic Punakha Dzong and the 250 m suspension bridge, both within walking distance of each other. Short hikes to Chorten, Jana village and hot‑spring sites add variety. The town is reachable by shared taxi or bus from Thimphu (1½–2 h) and all sights are walkable, making a brief stay easy to fit into a western‑Bhutan itinerary.

Language
Dzongkha is the national language, but English is the medium of school teaching, so most Bhutanese under 50 speak it; guides are fluent. Nepali (Lhotshamkha) is common in the south and Tshangla (Sharchop) in the east.
- 'Kuzuzangpo la' is hello; add 'la' to be polite.
- WhatsApp and WeChat are both used; your guide is your main contact.
