Use Puli as a 1-night base for Sun Moon Lake and the mountain roads, not a sightseeing stop: the town itself is a half-day.
Puli sits at the geographic centre of Taiwan, in a valley between the Central Mountain Range and Sun Moon Lake. It is a working town of about 76,000 people, known for mineral water, water bamboo, Shaoxing wine and handmade paper, and it is the practical base for the lake, Hehuan Mountain and the roads east. The 1999 earthquake flattened much of the centre; what you see now is rebuilt and low-rise. Come for the location and the food, not for a checklist of sights.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 20 minutes end to end. Buses run to Sun Moon Lake at least hourly (about 30 min, NT$50) and to Taichung every 15–20 min. Scooter rental shops cluster near the southeast bus station and generally require an international driving licence. Taxis rarely use meters: agree the fare before you get in.
