Puerto Viejo is the hub of Costa Rica's southern Caribbean, with surf at Salsa Brava and Playa Cocles, nearby beaches and a coastal road linking the villages south to Manzanillo. Three to four nights gives time for the beaches, Cahuita and a rainforest or snorkel day. The Caribbean side is wetter than the Pacific, so leave room to adjust outdoor plans.
