Puerto La Cruz is an oil and port city on Venezuela's northeast coast that works as a launch pad, not a destination in itself. Boats from Paseo Colón reach the beaches and islands of Mochima National Park, and the neighbouring towns of Lechería and Barcelona hold most of the hotels, restaurants and the airport. Come for the water and the seafood, keep your city time short, and treat the refinery skyline as part of the deal.

Get around
Taxis are the practical way to move between Puerto La Cruz, Lechería and Barcelona; agree the fare before you get in and use marked company cars only. Local buses are cheap but slow and confusing for a short stay. Boats to Mochima beaches leave from the two stations at either end of Paseo Colón and wait until they fill, so allow slack in the morning.

Scams and watch-outs
- Read your own government's travel advice for Venezuela before booking; this desk does not plan around it.
- Use only marked taxis or hotel-arranged cars. Unmarked 'pirata' cabs are linked to robbery and worse.
- The downtown bus terminal and the streets around it are not a place to walk with bags after dark.
- Carry small US dollar notes and bolívares in cash; card and ATM reliability is patchy (check).
- Boat trips to the islands depend on sea state and on filling a boat: no fixed departure time, no refund if the weather turns.
- Sun and salt are the main health risks; tap water is not for drinking.
Venezuela carries a serious travel-advice warning and Puerto La Cruz has the usual port-city crime: stick to taxis after dark, keep phones out of sight, carry two small cash stashes, and skip the terminal and downtown streets at night.
