Puebla
Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza
Give Puebla 2 nights as a base: the UNESCO centre is a half-day walk, Cholula and the forts fill the rest. Skip it only if you have under 24 h.
Puebla is Mexico's fourth-largest city, 2 h by bus from Mexico City and 1,100 m lower than the capital, so it is warmer and easier to walk. The 1987 UNESCO centre holds over 5,000 catalogued buildings in cantera stone, red brick and talavera tile, plus the forts of the 1862 Cinco de Mayo battle. Two nights covers the centre, Cholula and one day trip; food and talavera are the other reasons to come.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis have no meters in Puebla: agree the price before entering, or use an app.
- City buses are generally safe but crowded ones carry pickpockets; keep bags in front of you.
- June–September is the wet season: afternoon downpours, 200 mm+ in some months.
- Some churches restrict entry or ban photography inside; follow posted rules.
- Cinco de Mayo is a local festival, not a national holiday: book beds ahead for the first week of May.
Puebla is one of Mexico's calmer big cities and the historic centre is busy day and night. The real risks are unmarked taxi fares, pickpockets on crowded buses and wet-season downpours; use app rides after dark.
