Ptolemaida
Πτολεμαΐδα
Skip Ptolemaida unless you need a fuel stop on the Egnatia highway or have business at the power plants; the town offers little for a traveller.
Ptolemaida is an industrial town in the Eordaia plain, producing 70% of Greece's electricity from lignite. It sits at 600 m altitude, surrounded by Mount Askio and Mount Vermio. The main draw is the Paleontological, Historical and Folklore Museum, which displays mammoth bones and fossils from the area's prehistoric sea. Most travellers pass through on the Egnatia highway between Thessaloniki and Kozani or Kastoria.
