Presteigne
Llanandras
Go for one night if you are already in the Welsh Marches; a half-day stop covers the Judge's Lodging and the main street. Skip as a base.
Presteigne is a small border market town on the River Lugg, with a population of about 2,500, in Powys but closer to Herefordshire towns than to most of Wales. One museum, one main street of pubs and cafés, and quiet lanes are the whole offer. It works as a night between Knighton and Hay-on-Wye, not as a destination in itself.

Buses run Monday to Saturday to Knighton and Kington, with connections onward to Hereford and Leominster; there is no Sunday service on most routes. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses are sparse and mostly do not run on Sundays: check times before you plan a car-free day.
- Many pubs and cafés close early or shut on a weekday: check opening before a late arrival.
- Phone signal is patchy in the Lugg valley lanes outside town.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are unlit lanes after dark, fast B-road traffic with no pavement, and river levels after heavy rain.
