Presidente Prudente
Give Presidente Prudente one night as a west São Paulo stop, not a destination: see the Matarazzo cultural centre and the cathedral, then move on.
Presidente Prudente is the largest city of western São Paulo state, about 350 mi (560 km) west of the capital, and calls itself the capital of the West Paulista. It is a working regional centre of coffee and cattle money, not a tourist town: the sights are a handful of squares, a converted cotton mill and a good regional museum, all doable in a day. Most travellers pass through on the Raposo Tavares highway or land at the state airport and continue west toward Presidente Epitácio and the Paraná river, or east back to São Paulo.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable, but pavements are uneven and narrow, so watch your step. City buses (TCPP and PrudenExpress) cover the districts but have no tourist lines and little English signage. Taxis and app cars are cheap and the usual way to reach the airport, Cidade da Criança or Balneário da Amizade. Driving is possible but the central streets are tight, there are many speed bumps and fixed 60 km/h cameras; avoid the central blocks on weekdays.
