Base here 1–2 nights to sleep cheap and day-trip to Florence (25 min by train); skip it as a sightseeing stop if you only have a Florence window.
Prato is Tuscany's second city, 20 km west of Florence, and its low-profile cousin: a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with a Donatello pulpit, a textile-trade past, and cantuccini that were invented here. Trains to Florence Santa Maria Novella run every few minutes, so it works as a cheaper, quieter base for Florence day-trips. The old centre is walkable in half a day; the rest of the city is ordinary Italian working town.

Get around
The walled centre is small enough to cross on foot in 15–20 min. CAP Autolinee runs the LAM bus network (blue, orange, red lines through the centre; purple and light-blue lines to Montemurlo, Poggio a Caiano and Florence via the airport). Buy tickets before boarding at a tabaccheria or machine. Taxis wait at Piazza Duomo, the station and Via Cavour.
