Praia do Forte
Go for 2–3 nights as a beach break from Salvador: 82 km north, 1.5–2 h by bus, walkable village, turtle project and tide pools.
Praia do Forte is a small coastal village in Bahia, 82 km north of Salvador, built around one walkable street, a beach with tide pools and the Projeto Tamar sea-turtle base. It is tourist-oriented and priced above the Bahia average, but it works as a 2–3 night reset from Salvador's noise. Most travellers arrive by bus or rental car and never need a car inside the village.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Prices in the village run above the Bahia average; compare pousada rates before booking.
- Tide pools only appear at low tide: check the tide table for the day you plan to walk out.
- The Castelo Garcia D'Ávila ruins are a short drive out of town and poorly signposted; arrange transport back before you go.
- Sapiranga reserve trails are shared with off-road quad bikes; stay alert on the paths.
- Sun and surf are strong on this coast; use reef-safe sunscreen and watch children in the water.
The village is small and generally calm; the real risks are strong sun and surf, uneven reef at the tide pools, and paying resort prices for a mid-range room. Use 190/192/193 in an emergency.
