Powell
Powell, Ohio
Skip Powell as a base unless you have a car and a zoo or wedding reason: it is a Columbus suburb, 20–30 min from downtown, with 1–2 nights at most.
Powell is an upscale Columbus bedroom community in Delaware County, about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Columbus at the SR 750 / CR 9 junction. The main draw for visitors is the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and its waterpark Zoombezi Bay, both on Powell Road. The historic core along Olentangy Street is small: a few blocks of shops, ice cream and a local history society. Treat Powell as a half-day or one-night add-on to a Columbus trip, not a destination on its own.

- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No useful public transit: without a car or rideshare you are stuck.
- Zoo and Zoombezi Bay parking lots fill on summer weekends and holidays; arrive at opening.
- Sales tax is added at checkout; posted prices are not final.
- Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.
- Winter ice on SR 750 and the Olentangy bridges; drive slowly in Jan–Feb.
Powell is a low-crime, well-lit suburb and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving (SR 750 traffic, winter ice) and summer heat at the zoo; keep valuables out of sight in zoo parking lots.
