Poulsbo
Little Norway
Give Poulsbo half a day to one night: walk Front Street, eat, paddle Liberty Bay. It is a stop on a Kitsap loop, not a base.
Poulsbo is a small waterfront town on the Kitsap Peninsula, about 9200 people, settled by Norwegian loggers and farmers in the 1890s and still trading on that story along Front Street. The walkable core is four blocks of shops, bakeries and pubs around Liberty Bay. Most travellers see it in three to five hours between the Bainbridge ferry and the Hood Canal Bridge; one night is enough if you want a kayak morning or a brewery evening. It works best as one stop on a Kitsap Peninsula loop with Bainbridge Island, Kingston and Bremerton.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer weekends fill Front Street parking by late morning; arrive before 10:00 or park and walk.
- Ferry and bridge traffic backs up on Sunday afternoons and holiday weekends.
- Rain is the default from October to April: waterproof jacket, not an umbrella in wind.
- Restaurant kitchens close early on weeknights; check hours before a late dinner.
Very safe for a US small town; the real risks are wet roads, dark unlit shoulders on WA-3 and WA-305, and cold water if you paddle without a wetsuit.
