Give Poteau one night as a base for Cavanal Hill and the Talimena Drive; without a car, skip it — there is no practical way around.
Poteau is a small town in the Choctaw Country of eastern Oklahoma, on US 59/271 between Fort Smith and the Ouachita Mountains. It is a car town: the strip runs about 6 miles along US 59, and the reason to stop is Cavanal Hill, billed as the world's highest hill at 1,999 ft, plus access to the Talimena Scenic Drive. Two nights covers the hill, the museum and a drive; one night is enough if you are only breaking a road trip.

Car only. US 59 and US 271 meet here and the town stretches about 6 miles along US 59; there is no useful bus or taxi network for visitors. Fill up in town before heading into the mountains — services thin out fast on the Talimena Drive.
